ChiliProject is not maintained anymore. Please be advised that there will be no more updates.

We do not recommend that you setup new ChiliProject instances and we urge all existing users to migrate their data to a maintained system, e.g. Redmine. We will provide a migration script later. In the meantime, you can use the instructions by Christian Daehn.

[Propose] Blog more about features comparison

Added by Gabriel Mazetto at 2011-12-10 09:52 pm

One of the main things people like me expect from ChiliProject, is that it becames a "Better Redmine". Sorry for making the comparison here, but as it cames as a fork, there is no way to not make it. And I think it still a good thing to do, because competitions pushes inovation.

So, as people constantly evaluate which one are better suited for then, they always waste some time trying to compare features they think are essencial, and it's always a hard work to do, because there is no "One place to look" to find it.

So I propose to like every redmine release version, Chili Project makes a blog post analysing it, and saying wheter major features are planned or denied and the reason. This type of information could convert users to ChiliProject.

Also, another option is to maintain a Wiki page with a summarized diference of boths.

Good questions Gabriel. Let me respond and then try to summarize.

So I propose to like every redmine release version, Chili Project makes a blog post analysing it, and saying wheter major features are planned or denied and the reason. This type of information could convert users to ChiliProject.

That wouldn't work anymore. From ChiliProject 2.0 and on we "finished" the fork and started working on our own features and bugs. So comparing ChiliProject to Redmine at that point wouldn't really be useful, it would be "Redmine has X and ChiliProject has Y". (Though we do pull in some features and bug fixes from Redmine every now and then, as do they).

Also, another option is to maintain a Wiki page with a summarized diference of boths.

This was proposed when we first forked but I don't see that anyone got around to creating the page. So I created a blank wiki page for this at Differences Between Chiliproject and Redmine. :)

With the upcoming release of ChiliProject 3.0 we will finally have some major differences from Redmine.

  • ChiliProject 1.x was basically Redmine 1.1 (?) with some extra bug fixes and the start of the community. We purposely didn't make a lot of changes in order to make the switch from Redmine to ChiliProject easier.
  • In ChiliProject 2.x we upgraded a lot of old and incomplete libraries. There were a few features for general users but most of the work was to make development easier.
  • ChiliProject 3.x (due Jan 2012-ish) is bringing some big changes that will be visible to everyone. We have a brand new design with a modern look, a more powerful text processing system (for wikis), and the foundation for adding tags.

As part of 3.x I'm going to try to do more documentation and blogging about the new features. We're going to need them anyways and this is a good time to show how ChiliProject is different.

Thanks for the answer, I also find very important the decisions made for 2.x. As Rails increases versions, it becames more and more a challange to setup a new Redmine environment, without bundler, for example. I consider that you guys are building a better base to an amazing software that could takeover his ancestor. Also considering start helping the project as soon as I finish some projects I'm working in.

Concerning bundler I had troubles installing Chilliproject on my Windows XP SP3 laptop. It seems that it is a Linux world thing. I am running Redmine now and I want to have a test installation of Chilliproject. The installation of bundler stopped me. And there is the question: Will be there procedure for installing on Windows machine?

Just to let people know, I've updated wiki page: "Differences_Between_Chiliproject_and_Redmine", and tried to summarize everything I could remember. Feel free to contribute
