ChiliProject is not maintained anymore. Please be advised that there will be no more updates.

We do not recommend that you setup new ChiliProject instances and we urge all existing users to migrate their data to a maintained system, e.g. Redmine. We will provide a migration script later. In the meantime, you can use the instructions by Christian Daehn.

Installation on openSUSE 11

This guide is written for ChiliProject versions 1.4.0. Other versions might need different dependencies and installation steps.


This is a quick guide on how to setup ChiliProject on openSUSE 11.4. It is not all-encompassing but covers the basics and will get you up and running.

All commands mentioned here can be run as root, or be done through a user with sudo. This guide will walk through starting as root.

We are going to setup and install the following:

  • Ruby Enterprise Edition (REE)
  • Rails
  • RubyGems
  • Passenger
  • Apache
  • MySQL

This is a standard setup, however you can replace Apache and passenger easily with your application server of choice, as well as choose a different version of Ruby or database without much hassle.

Global dependencies and basic system setup

Install apache, mysql, git, subversion, the required build libraries, as well as a few extra's.

Please pay attention to what you are getting here, and if something does not fit your requirements, it's very likely you can do without it, or choose an alternative. Here we simply tried to cover all our bases so the installation is smooth.

needed for rvm:

zypper in git

suggested after rvm is installed:
zypper in patterns-openSUSE-devel_basis gcc-c++ bzip2 readline-devel zlib-devel libxml2-devel libxslt-devel libyaml-devel libopenssl-devel libffi45-devel

needed for mysql:
zypper in mysql-community-server libmysqld-devel

needed for RMagick:
zypper in libbz2-devel ImageMagick-devel libMagick++-devel libMagickCore4 libMagickWand4

needed for apache / passenger:
zypper in curl-devel apache2-devel apr-devel

Start httpd and mysql and enable them to run on boot:

rcapache start
chkconfig apache2 on
rcmysql start
chkconfig mysql on

Create a user that we are going to put chiliproject under, in this tutorial this user will be called chili.

Install Ruby, Gems, and ChiliProject-Specific Dependencies

In this example we are going to install just a single version of ruby to use just for our chili user.

Install rvm

bash < <(curl -s

Add this line to the bottom of ~/.bashrc

[[ -s "$HOME/.rvm/scripts/rvm" ]] && . "$HOME/.rvm/scripts/rvm" 

Log out and log back in so your shell picks up these changes.

Ensure rvm is installed and running as a function

type rvm | head -1

Update and reload rvm (just in case)

rvm get head
rvm reload

Install Ree

Install Ruby Enterprise Edition and set it as the default, this may take some time depending on your hardware.

rvm install ree
rvm --default use ree

Install rails and required gems

Install rails version 2.3.5, the mysql gem, and the correct version of the i18n gem

gem install rails --version 2.3.5
gem install mysql
gem install -v=0.4.2 i18n

These are some optional gems you may want to install. rmagick will give you pretty graphs and ruby-openid will enable the ability to activate openid logins.

gem install rmagick
gem install ruby-openid

Install Passenger

Follow the prompts and read the last part of the output instructing you to copy-paste some lines into your /etc/apache2/conf.d/rails.conf

gem install passenger

While we are editing apache, let's go ahead and create a virtualhost entry, edit as neccessary:

        DocumentRoot /home/chili/chiliproject/public
        <Directory /home/chili/chiliproject/public>
                AllowOverride all
                Options -MultiViews
                Order allow,deny
                Allow from all 

Install ChiliProject

The installation of ChiliProject itself should be done as user in the user home:

su - chili

Follow the standard Installation guide. In this guide, we are going to

  • get the ChiliProject code,
  • put it in the correct place,
  • connect it to the chosen database, and
  • perform a basic configuration

As mentioned earlier, you can easily switch many of the items installed here with alternatives, however this guide will not cover all of them.
