[Proposal] Reform "Overview" to "My project dashboard"

Added by Jan Wedekind at 2011-08-08 02:18 pm

Hi everyone,

I suggested that in #263, but as Eric pointed out correctly, it's not really a thing that can be changed just by the theme.

Essentially, I think "Overview" page as it is right now is not particularly useful to the user. You land there just to click through to another page. When I click on "Overview" right now, the only thing I ever use is the time tracking links in the sidebar. Apart from that, as a landing page for the project it's pretty much useless for the user.

Instead, I'd suggest to have a page that is much more user-centric. I would propose to have a "Project dashboard" landing page for each project. This one should display project-related often-used information relavant to the user, much like on the default "My page" side (only project specific). E.g.

  • Open issues assigned to me
  • issue watched by me
  • Issue that are
    • Overdue
    • Due today
    • Due this week
    • Due this month
  • ...

Just to give an idea.

The page could still display "Latest news" of course.

The project summary/background information (website, description, members, issue summary) I move into the background or a separate "Project summary" page. Again: I think this information is really only ever needed by users who don't know the project. Once you work in a project however, it's not helping your work at all and becomes a nuisance. Since Chiliproject is a work tool, I think it should first and foremost make daily tasks as easy as possible.

What do you think?

Cheers,
Jan

We're (finn) are currently implementing something probably similar for a client currently, and I think it makes sense too that project admins can choose what to show on the project overview page. Do I understand correctly that your idea is to have project admin settings to change the overview page, and not something the user can set himself?

Yes, I wasn't thinking of a user-customizable "dashboard" - at least not yet.

You guys must have more experience on that since Finnlabs has some large installations out there: how are users actually using the current overview page? I think nobody uses it. But when you switch projects, it's the default landing page.

Starting Thursday, I will have loads more time (switching jobs) and will try to give more concrete ideas and maybe some sketches.

Cheers,
Jan

Jan:

I agree with your overall vision. An idea several of us had was to basically reuse the things on My Page to customize the project overview. So a project manager could add the modules he thought was useful and everyone on the project would see them.
